| Preview of Metro Board of Directors June 2021 meeting Posted: 23 Jun 2021 10:42 AM PDT The Metro Board of Directors meets virtually at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 24. You can watch live here — the webstream will also be saved and available for those who wish to watch/listen at a later date. The agenda for the meeting is above with links to Metro staff reports and presentations. For those who would like to offer public testimony at the meeting, here are the instructions:
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s tenure as Board Chair ends June 30. Supervisor Hilda Solis assumes Chair duties beginning July 1 and continuing through June 30, 2022. Among the items the Board is scheduled to tackle Thursday: •The Board will consider approving nominations to Metro’s five regional Service Councils — the citizen advisory bodies to Metro in five geographic areas: Gateway Cities, the San Fernando Valley, the San Gabriel Valley, the South Bay and Westside/Central. Staff report •The Board will consider approving a $50-million budget for phase one of the J Line (Silver) electric charging infrastructure project. Quick background: Metro is working to convert its entire fleet of buses to zero emission vehicles by 2030, a decade ahead of the state deadline for transit buses. The G Line (Orange) was recently electrified and the J Line is now on deck. Staff report •The Board will consider revised criteria for funding highway projects with money from Measure R and Measure M, Metro’s two most recent sales tax measures approved. The criteria offer more flexibility to the type of projects that get funded, including walking and biking improvements. Staff report •The Board will receive an update on Metro’s Fareless System Initiative. The Board last month approved the further development of a fareless pilot project for students and low-income residents. Staff report and presentation •The Board will consider a motion asking for a report back on potential community benefits that will be part of the LA Aerial Rapid Transit project to Dodger Stadium. Quick background: a private firm proposed the project through Metro’s Unsolicited Proposal process and Metro is serving as the lead agency on environmentally clearing the project. Staff report •The Board will consider a motion asking Metro staff to develop a plan to ensure the viability and growth of Metro’s Dorothy Peyton Gray Transportation Library and Archive. From the staff report:
The Library offers a wide variety of resources, including a great Flickr stream loaded with historical images of transportation in Los Angeles County. If you have time on your hands, I highly recommend perusing. A few images from the archives that are particularly fetching:

| Reminder: new schedules start this Sunday, June 27 Posted: 23 Jun 2021 09:18 AM PDT
Reminder: Metro service changes will go into effect this Sunday, June 27. Many of the trips being added will be on our busiest bus lines. We're also improving weekday rail service frequencies during peak times on the A Line (Blue), E Line (Expo), C Line (Green) and L Line (Gold). For the list of bus lines that will have additional trips, see our previous post here. Check for changes to your bus line with our online tool at metro.net/mybus. You can get info specific to your trip, or download the new schedule and map for the line. A brochure summarizing all bus service changes is also available here. If you use Transit app, Metro's official smartphone app, schedule changes will appear by June 27. Masks are still required when riding public transit. Please be sure to wear a mask on Metro. Metro has installed mask dispensers on numerous buses, trains and at stations to make it easier for riders who may have forgotten or misplaced their masks. |
| New Metro Micro service zones in Pasadena and Highland Park launch June 27 Posted: 22 Jun 2021 10:41 AM PDT
Metro Micro will be expanding to two new service zones in Highland Park/Eagle Rock/Glendale and Altadena/Pasadena/Sierra Madre beginning June 27 in support of the second phase of NextGen Bus Plan service changes. NextGen is a major overhaul of Metro's bus network and is designed to speed up bus trips and provide more frequent service on many routes. Metro Micro's role is to help provide rides in parts of town that are challenging for fixed route buses to serve. With this expansion, Metro Micro will be operating in seven zones:
Metro Micro rides currently cost $1 per ride (transfer not included). If you are new to Metro Micro, your first two rides are free! Visit metro.net/micro to claim your free rides. Rides must begin and end within each zone. Riders can pay via stored value on TAP card or with a credit card. Metro Micro will continue to operate safely in these two new zones, requiring passengers to wear face masks and reducing vehicle capacity by 50 percent to accommodate social distancing. To book a ride: use the Metro Micro app (available in the App Store and Google Play); Transit, Metro’s official app; book.metro-micro.net; or call 323.GO.METRO (323.466.3876). Additional service zones will launch in San Fernando Valley and Westwood/Century City later this year. For more information on Metro Micro, visit metro.net/micro. |

| Veterans Legacy Art Project: Call to Community-Based Arts Organizations Posted: 21 Jun 2021 02:41 PM PDT Metro invites community-based arts organizations to submit qualifications for programming and artwork design services for a project that will result in an original mosaic artwork at a site near the future Westwood/VA Hospital Station, part of the Westside Purple (D Line) Extension Project. The future Veterans Legacy Art Project artwork will honor the extensive National Veterans Mural painted throughout the intersection at Wilshire Blvd. and Bonsall Ave. near the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) West Los Angeles Medical Center. During the construction of the new Metro station, a portion of the mural that is located on the off-ramp wall from westbound Wilshire Blvd. to Bonsall Ave. will be decommissioned. While the majority of the over 23,000 square foot mural will remain, the removal of this portion is necessary to build the north plaza of the Westwood/VA Hospital Station. Project planners found there is no available space to accommodate the portion in its original location. It cannot be relocated due to the condition and age of the wall. The rest of the mural, which extends throughout the underpass and walls on all sides of the Wilshire Blvd./Bonsall Ave. intersection, will be protected in place during construction. Dedicated in 1995, the National Veterans Mural was painted by artist and U.S. Navy veteran, Peter Stewart, who was first known for his POW/MIA Mural in Venice, CA. Both murals were done through the National Veterans Foundation (NVF). NVF's founder and veterans counselor, Shad Meshad, worked with Stewart. Their therapy sessions reignited a passion for art during a time when Stewart was suffering from PTSD, drug addiction and homelessness. Though Stewart died before the National Veterans Mural was completed, the mural has remained for over 26 years and is a landmark for veterans and VA staff at the VA West Los Angeles Medical Center. The mosaic artwork for the Veterans Legacy Art Project will be prominently located directly across the street from the site of the original mural, facing the north plaza of the new station. The community-based arts organization selected through this Request for Qualifications will identify and collaborate with a lead artist to develop community programming that will inform the design of the future mosaic artwork (to be fabricated through a separate contracting process). Veterans will participate in the design process and the final artwork design will also be determined with veteran input. Applications are due August 27, 2021 at 5 p.m. PST An info session for interested arts organizations will be held via Zoom on Thursday, July 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. RSVP for the info session on Eventbrite For full details about this specific opportunity and to apply, visit metro.net/art and go to "Artist Opportunities." | Groundbreaking held for Airport Metro Connector project Posted: 21 Jun 2021 01:44 PM PDT ![]() Demolition begins this morning on an old building on the site of the future Airport Metro Connector project. In the background is the LAX Automated People Mover, which is under construction. ![]() This rendering and the three below show the new Airport Metro Connector station that will have light rail platforms, bus bays and an easy transfer to the airport people mover, which will serve the airport terminals. Metro today held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction on the $898.6-million Airport Metro Connector Project that will directly connect the Metro system to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Making it possible to take a train to LAX, one of the nation’s busiest airports, has been something the region has been trying to accomplish for the past three decades. Watch the Facebook Live event here. The Airport Metro Connector Project (AMC) is the ninth station along the Crenshaw/LAX Line currently under construction and will connect directly with the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Automated People Mover project — presently being built — that will connect directly with the airport passenger terminals. “Everyone traveling to or from LAX should have access to modern, reliable public transportation that gets them to their destination on time,” said Los Angeles Mayor and Metro Board Chair Eric Garcetti. “The Airport Metro Connector is a historic step toward reimagining how travelers experience our airport — a turning point that will be a source of jobs and economic growth, reduce congestion, and help our airport realize its potential as a world-class gateway to Los Angeles.” The new AMC station will be located at Aviation and 96th Street. The project includes platforms to access Metro light rail trains, and an expansive 16-bay bus plaza that will serve Metro and other municipal bus operators including Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, Culver City Bus, Torrance Transit, GTrans (Gardena) and Beach Cities Transit. In addition, the station features a bike hub, a private vehicle drop-off zone and easy access to the LAX people mover, a new Metro customer service center, interactive information kiosks, public restrooms and commercial space for tenants who will provide passenger conveniences. “This is an exciting project that will serve as the 'Gateway' to LAX for future generations — just as LAX has long served as the gateway to Southern California for so many millions of people,” said Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins. “The AMC station will also provide multiple connections to the Metro system and will help airport-area employees and travelers easily get to wherever they need to go in our region.” The rail station portion of the project will contain two light rail platforms that will be easily accessed via escalators and elevators, new ADA compliant swing door fare gates to allow for smooth passage with luggage and a full roof covering over the entire platform. The integration of public art is a key feature of the project and has been part of the design process form the earliest planning phases of the project. The station will feature a large-scale signature sculpture — by Los Angeles artist Glenn Kaino — that will be suspended over the escalators leading up to the ceiling oculus best described as a spiral pathway suspended in the air. The project has been designed to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating with sustainable features that include 550,000-plus kilowatts of solar panels, large native landscaping areas and electric bus charging stations. The AMC project is forecast to be completed in 2024. Here are photos of today's groundbreaking event. For more information on the Airport Metro Connector Project visit: https://www.metro.net/projects/lax-extension/ Additional Quotes “Not only is LAX one of the busiest airports in the world, it's a job center for Angelenos, particularly for those who reside in South Los Angeles, said Los Angeles County Supervisor and Metro Board Member Holly Mitchell. "As we enter the final stages of construction on Crenshaw LAX, the Airport Metro Connector will serve as an essential bridge to the airport for visitors, residents, and our vital aviation workforce.” “Reagan once said the most terrifying words in the English language were, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.' We know they are actually 'Hey, can you give me a ride to LAX?' In a few short years, with the construction of this project and the Automated People Mover, your answer will be 'No way—take Metro!,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor and Metro Board Member Janice Hahn. “The Airport Metro Connector Station will be a new Union Station for the Westside, connecting residents and employees to bus and rail, and welcoming travelers from all over the world to Southern California,” said Metro Board Member and LA City Council Member Mike Bonin. “Thanks to incredible collaboration and coordination between Metro and the airport, future travelers will experience a modern and seamless transfer from planes to buses and trains that can take them nearly anywhere in Los Angeles. This groundbreaking is a pivotal milestone in our effort to give residents and visitors alike real alternatives to sitting in traffic.” “Today marks a major milestone in connecting the entire Metro system to one of the busiest airports in the country with a state-of-the-art transportation facility that will be used by thousands of riders each day,” said James T. Butts, Inglewood Mayor and Metro Board Member. “Improving transportation mobility options is key to growing ridership and getting people out of their vehicles and onto public transit.” “This project, once completed, will make navigating the Metro system with a direct connection to LAX easy to use and convenient for riders offering a safe passageway to this busy airport,” said Whittier Council Member and Metro Board Member Fernando Dutra. “Metro serves many destinations throughout the Los Angeles County region, and this project make connecting to those destinations a reality for travelers arriving at LAX.” “Today is a monumental day, not only for our friends at Metro, but for all of us at Los Angeles World Airports, as we move one step closer to our vision for a connected, seamless journey to and from LAX,” said Justin Erbacci, Chief Executive Officer, Los Angeles World Airports. “This long-awaited connection to the regional transportation system will create new options for our guests and employees to get to LAX – and we look forward to the future connection to our Automated People Mover train system.” |
